Easter Fun Fact: Which came first, the chicken or the egg?
March 30, 2018
Generations have been trying to crack the age-old riddle. Even scientists joined the debate. And you’ve probably made a bet with your friends. Whether you answer chicken or egg, you have a 50 percent chance of getting it right. So, which came first, the chicken or the egg?
If you answer egg, you have geniuses Stephen Hawking and Christopher Langan to back you up. Hawking, the famous astrophysicist, and Langan, who developed the “Cognitive-Theoretic Model of the Universe,” argue that the egg came before the chicken. In the Art of Knowing, Langan explains that species that lay eggs like dinosaurs have been around longer than chickens. Citing research, he adds that dinosaurs were among chicken’s biological ancestors.
But wait! Scientists from the universities of Sheffield and Warwick say that chicken must have come first because ovocledidin-1, a protein found in the chicken's ovaries is necessary for the formation of egg.
Whether it’s the chicken or the egg that came first, an important question to ask is where the chicken or egg you buy comes from.
