Planting Food to Fight Malnutrition

Planting Food to Fight Malnutrition

Grow your own food for better nutrition.

This Nutrition Month, the National Nutrition Council (NNC) urges families to start their own home gardens to help solve malnutrition.

In line with the theme, “Ugaliing Magtanim, Sapat na Nutrisyon Aanihin (Make it a habit to plant to get proper nutrition), this year’s campaign focuses on promoting home food production through gardening.

“Having a home garden means having a low-cost, healthy diet, food all year long, and a chance to make some money,” according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Eating five different kinds of fruits and vegetables daily will help with the physical and mental development of children, FAO added.

A study conducted by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) showed that over 29,000 children are dying annually due to the high prevalence of undernutrition in the Philippines.

It is essential to include fruits and vegetables in the family’s meal plan as they carry large doses of vitamins and minerals not found in other food groups.

Planting fruits and vegetables can be a family affair. Older kids can be tasked to plow the soil, plant, water, and harvest. Meanwhile, the younger ones can weed, and help pick fruits and vegetables.

This way, parents not only teach children to plant but also the importance of hard work, discipline, patience, and responsibility.

With Kinder Garden,  even toddlers can learn to plant. The set includes two pots—one for the parent and one for the toddler. To make planting more fun, the box contains four bags of gold-flaked-magic soil.

The family can also start the garden with Sow & Gro Organic Garden Kits, which contains four coconut husk pots, four plant markers, four packets of plant seeds, a box plant food, four packs of fertilizer-infused starting compost, and a quick start guide.

Keep your family strong and healthy!
